The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on Cairns from March 15-17 as the Baton journeys towards its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.

Setting off in Australia on 25 December 2017, the Baton will travel for 100 days to connect with as many people as possible in every state and territory.

The Queen’s Baton carries a message from Her Majesty The Queen through the entire Commonwealth. The Games are declared officially open when the message is read aloud.

Thursday 15 March

  • Baton arrives in Cairns and will take in some of the region’s popular tourist sites via Skyrail, the Kuranda Scenic Railway and a boat ride to the Great Barrier Reef.

Friday 16 March

  • 7:30am - free community celebration breakfast at Palm Cove
  • 9am - Northern Beaches relay stage begins at TAS Kewarra Beach, travels to Holy Cross Primary School (see Northern Beaches QBR route map ( PDF, 0.29 MB )). Come along and cheer on the batonbearers!
  • 11:45am - city relay Stage 1 begins at Cairns State High School, then travels through the city along the Esplanade, then to Cairns Botanic Gardens, through Manunda and back to the city via Gatton and Severin Streets. (see city QBR Stage 1 map ( PDF, 0.57 MB )). Come along and cheer on the batonbearers!
  • 1:40pm - city relay Stage 2 begins at Cairns West State School, travels to Cairns city centre and ends at Munro Martin Parklands at approx. 5:30pm. (see city QBR Stage 2 map ( PDF, 0.81 MB )).  Come along and cheer on the batonbearers!
  • 4:00pm - community celebration and concert at Munro Martin Parklands

Saturday 17 March

  • 9:50am - relay departs Mount Sheridan Plaza, travels to Walker Road Sporting Complex for arrival at approx 11:10am (see Edmonton QBR route map ( PDF, 0.39 MB )). Come along and cheer on the batonbearers!
  • 11am - community celebration at Walker Road Sporting Complex, featuring Come & Try sporting showcase

Traffic delays

The QBR will travel as a moving convoy along 31km of Cairns roads, including 40 streets and 23 roundabouts. Roads will remain open throughout the relay but there will be temporary (rolling) road and lane closures, changed traffic conditions and parking restrictions as the relay passes through each area. The route will be supervised by Queensland Police at all times.
