Vines and garden beds that draw inspiration from the Munro Martin Parklands will feature in a concept design to enhance pedestrian experience in one of Cairns’ most important streets.
Council today endorsed a plan to upgrade Florence Street, which will become a focal point of the city with the opening of the Cairns Performing Arts Centre next year.
“We already have the Munro Martin Parklands and the new Cairns Aquarium drawing people into Florence Street,” Mayor Bob Manning said.
“Once CPAC opens, this area will be further activated as one of the city’s busiest cultural and tourist hot spots.”
It’s envisaged that Florence Street will provide an attractive link from the Cairns Esplanade through to The Precinct (CPAC and Munro Martin Parklands), following tropical urbanism themes.
“We’re looking to carry the vine arbours that are so successful in the parklands into the streetscape,” Cr Manning said. “We want to make it a place that people want to walk along and enjoy the atmosphere of the city.”
The concept plans, including artist impressions, will now be finalised and subsequently released for public consultation.
