Cairns Regional Council will write to the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) to request that they, subject to thorough public consultation, proceed as soon as is practicable with a series of projects to upgrade the Captain Cook Highway and ease congestion issues.

In particular, Council will request action to address congestion issues at:

  • Grove St to Airport Avenue
  • Mother of Good Counsel School Zone
  • Airport Avenue / Captain Cook Highway intersection
  • Whitfield Street / Captain Cook Highway intersection

In addition, Council will request that DTMR presents to Council its plans for further upgrades of the Captain Cook Highway, including the Airport Avenue to Barron River Bridge and the Barron River Bridge to Yorkeys Knob Roundabout, as well as an update on the program for the Smithfield bypass.
