Babinda Boulders improvement works

Project update

The following improvement works are due for completion late November 2017:

  • Construction of an all-abilities access ramp into the main swimming hole
Works: Monday 24 July to late-November 2017, weather permitting.
While works are underway, there will be times when access to the swimming hole is closed. An alternate swimming hole can be found approx. 100m along the Goldfield Trail.
  • Replacements of footbridges, viewing platform and balustrading at lookouts
Works: Monday 24 July for approx. 12 weeks, weather permitting.
While works are underway, there will be temporary closures in place along the walking track to the Devil’s Pool.

Works will also be conducted on the balustrades on the Goldfield Trail bridge.

Refer to the bridge location plan ( PDF, 0.26 MB ) for further information.

Four pedestrian bridges and two viewing platforms at the popular Babinda Boulders will be replaced. A new all-abilities water access will be created near the existing ladder, and the day facility area will be improved.

This work stems from the Babinda Boulders Master Plan which aims to improve visitor experience while maintaining the natural character of the precinct.

The Boulders is a popular swimming spot and picnic area in the foothills of the Bellenden Ker Range. Facilities onsite cater for a range of outdoor pursuits including picnics, bush-walking, swimming, canoeing, commercial tourism, sightseeing and social events.  Council provides and maintains the facilities at the site.

This $1 million project is being delivered under the Queensland Government's Works for Queensland (W4Q) program, which has provided $15.5 million to Cairns Regional Council to fast-track job-creating community and infrastructure renewal works.
